Sheffield is the cheapest major student city in England — and it’s also one of the greenest, with more trees per person than any other UK city and the Peak District National Park on its doorstep. Two excellent universities (University of Sheffield, Russell Group; Sheffield Hallam) draw 60,000+ students.

Hallam’s City Campus is in the heart of Sheffield. Modern apartment buildings along West Street and around the Peace Gardens. PBSA studios £130–220/week. The Moor market has excellent cheap food.

FAQ
Is Sheffield really that cheap? Yes. A room in Crookes costs less than a room in Zone 4 London, but you’re 10 minutes from campus, not 40 minutes on the Tube. What’s Sheffield known for? Outdoor activities. The Peak District is a 20-minute bus ride. Climbing, hiking, and trail running are major student activities. Monthly budget? £500–750/month all-in for a room in a shared house — possibly the best value in England.
