New Zealand’s Working Holiday Visa (WHV) is one of the world’s best programs — 12 months (or 23 for UK/Canada citizens) of work and travel in one of the most beautiful countries on Earth. But the first month’s accommodation can be tricky, especially if you’re chasing seasonal work.
First Week: Where to Land
Most WHV holders arrive in Auckland or Christchurch. Book 4–7 nights at a hostel:
- Auckland: YHA Auckland City, Haka Lodge, Attic Backpackers. NZD 30–40/night for a dorm bed.
- Christchurch: Jailhouse Accommodation (yes, a former prison — a classic WHV experience). NZD 28–38/night.
- Wellington: The Dwellington, Trek Global. NZD 30–40/night.
Use your first week to: get an IRD number (tax), open a bank account, buy a SIM card, and decide where you’re actually going.
Seasonal Worker Housing
Fruit Picking & Horticulture
The main WHV work sectors. Regions and seasons:
| Region | Season | Crop | Housing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hawke’s Bay | Jan–May | Apples, grapes | Hostels NZD 150–250/week; some orchards provide worker dorms |
| Central Otago | Dec–Mar | Cherries, apricots | Very tight — book early. Dorm-style accommodation from NZD 180/week |
| Bay of Plenty | Mar–Jun | Kiwifruit | Te Puke is the center. Hostels and orchard-provided housing from NZD 160/week |
| Marlborough | Feb–Apr | Grapes (vintage) | Blenheim has hostel and camping options. Vintage season is intense — 12-hour days, 6 days/week |
Ski Season (June–October)
Queenstown and Wanaka are the main ski towns. Accommodation is EXPENSIVE and SCARCE during winter. Staff housing from NZD 180–250/week if you work for the ski field. Otherwise, shared houses in Queenstown run NZD 250–400/week per room.
Pro tip: Apply for jobs that include accommodation. Cardrona, Treble Cone, and The Remarkables all offer staff housing — though it’s often dorm-style and basic.
Long-Term Flatting
After you’ve settled into a region, flatting is the way to go. The NZ flatting culture is very WHV-friendly — flats are used to people coming and going. Find flats on:
- Trade Me Property (tradeMe.co.nz)
- NZ Flatmates Facebook groups (region-specific)
- Backpacker Board (hostel noticeboards — seriously, still a thing in NZ)
Health Insurance
NZ’s WHV requires you to have medical insurance for your entire stay — but WHV holders don’t get access to NZ’s public healthcare. You NEED insurance. Get SafetyWing coverage for your working holiday.
FAQ
Do I need a car for a WHV? For city-based work, no. For fruit picking in rural areas, yes — or at least make friends with someone who has one. The “buy a cheap car, road trip, sell it” is a classic WHV move. Can I extend my WHV? UK and Canadian citizens can get 23 or 36 months depending on the scheme. Other nationalities: 12 months, extension possible if you do 3 months of specified regional work. What’s the minimum I should arrive with? Immigration suggests NZD 4,200 for living costs for the first few months. Realistically, NZD 5,000–7,000 is safer given housing deposits.
