Ottawa Student Housing 2026: Areas Near uOttawa, Carleton & Algonquin

Ottawa combines the advantages of a capital city — national museums, Parliament Hill, diplomatic and tech employers — with the affordability of a mid-sized city. uOttawa (the world’s largest bilingual university), Carleton, and Algonquin College host 100,000+ students. Housing is 30–40% cheaper than Toronto or Vancouver.

uOttawa (Sandy Hill & Downtown)

Sandy Hill: The definitive uOttawa neighborhood. Nineteenth-century mansions converted to student housing sit alongside embassies and diplomatic residences. Strathcona Park and the Rideau River provide green space. 5–10 min walk to campus. Rooms CAD 600–1,000/month.

ByWard Market & Lowertown: Ottawa’s historic market district — restaurants, bars, and the best poutine at Elgin Street Diner. 10–15 min walk to uOttawa. Rooms CAD 700–1,200/month.

Golden Triangle: Between the Rideau Canal and Elgin Street. Nicer apartments, close to the Canal for winter skating. 10 min walk. Rooms CAD 700–1,200/month.

Carleton University

Old Ottawa South: Across the Rideau Canal from Carleton. Independent shops along Bank Street, the Mayfair Theatre (Ottawa’s oldest cinema). 10 min bus or walk across the canal locks. Rooms CAD 600–1,000/month.

Glebe: One of Ottawa’s most desirable neighborhoods. Lansdowne Park with its stadium, farmers market, and Whole Foods. 10–15 min bus. Rooms CAD 700–1,300/month. Popular with Carleton grad students.

Little Italy: Preston Street’s Italian restaurants and the annual Italian Week festival. The O-Train Trillium Line connects to Carleton. Rooms CAD 600–1,100/month.

Algonquin College (Nepean)

College Ward & Centrepointe: The areas around Algonquin. Suburban, car-oriented but served by express buses. Rooms CAD 500–900/month. Some of the cheapest student housing in a Canadian city.

Baseline Road Corridor: Apartment buildings along Baseline Road have direct bus connections to Algonquin. Rooms CAD 500–850/month.

Transport

Ottawa’s O-Train Confederation Line (LRT) is efficient but limited. The Transitway bus system is extensive. Most uOttawa students walk or bike — the campus is downtown. Carleton and Algonquin students rely more on buses. Ottawa has excellent cycling infrastructure, including the Rideau Canal pathways.

FAQ

Is Ottawa boring compared to Toronto/Montreal? Ottawa is smaller and quieter, but not boring. The ByWard Market has excellent nightlife, the city has a surprisingly good music scene, and being bilingual (English/French) adds a unique dimension. Toronto and Montreal are 2 hours away by train. Do I need to speak French? Not at all — Ottawa is predominantly English-speaking, though uOttawa is bilingual. But knowing some French helps, especially for government co-op jobs. Monthly budget? CAD 1,200–2,000 depends on neighborhood and room type. Far below Toronto (CAD 1,500–2,500) or Vancouver (CAD 1,500–2,800).
