Hobart is Australia’s best-kept student secret. The University of Tasmania (UTAS) has invested heavily in its Sandy Bay campus and the city centre, MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) has made Hobart an international cultural destination, and the rental market is the cheapest of any Australian capital city.
Sandy Bay
UTAS’s main campus area. Tree-lined streets, views of the Derwent River, and a mix of 1950s-70s homes converted to student rentals. 5–15 min walk to campus. Rooms AUD 150–250/week. Some of the cheapest university-adjacent housing in Australia.
Battery Point
Hobart’s historic maritime quarter — colonial sandstone cottages, Arthur Circus (Australia’s most charming roundabout), and the Salamanca Market (Saturdays, Australia’s best outdoor market). 20 min walk to UTAS. Rooms AUD 180–280/week. More expensive but impossibly charming.
South Hobart & Dynnyrne
South of Sandy Bay, further up the hill. More space, bushland views, and the Cascade Brewery nearby. 10–15 min bus. Rooms AUD 140–230/week.
North Hobart
Hobart’s restaurant strip. Elizabeth Street has excellent food from Malaysian to modern Australian. The State Cinema (bookstore + cinema, Hobart’s cultural hub) is here. 15 min bus to UTAS. Rooms AUD 150–250/week.

FAQ
Is UTAS respected? Yes — strong in marine/antarctic science, agriculture, and medicine. UTAS is small (~28,000 students) but punches above its weight. Is Hobart too quiet? It’s smaller than the mainland capitals, but MONA’s Dark Mofo and MONA FOMA festivals bring world-class art and music, and the Salamanca Market/Sandy Bay area has plenty going on. If you want 24-hour mega-city energy, Hobart isn’t it. If you want a beautiful, unique, affordable student experience, it’s outstanding. Monthly budget? AUD 1,200–1,800/month — the lowest of any Australian capital.
